About

NR-RetroWorks is a small, independent workshop focused on keeping classic game hardware useful, repairable, and interesting.

I work on replacement parts, refurbishment, hardware upgrades, reproduction components, and original projects for vintage consoles and controllers. Some products exist because an original part has become difficult or expensive to find. Others exist because there is simply a better way to solve an old problem with modern components, fabrication, and manufacturing techniques.

The goal is not to turn old hardware into something unrecognizable. It is to preserve what made it special while making it practical to keep using.

Built at the Workbench

NR-RetroWorks is not a large company with products pulled from a catalog. The things you see here are developed, tested, assembled, modified, or refurbished at my own workbench.

That can mean designing a replacement part from measurements of the original hardware, building a 3D-printed adapter around a modern component, developing a new circuit board, reverse-engineering old hardware or software, or finding a practical way to keep an aging system working without relying on increasingly scarce original parts.

When I sell something, I want to understand what it is, how it works, and why it belongs in the machine it was designed for.

Modern Solutions for Old Hardware

Classic hardware deserves better than becoming disposable simply because one small component is no longer manufactured.

Modern components, PCB fabrication, 3D printing, microcontrollers, programmable logic, and better development tools make it possible to solve problems that would have been impractical years ago.

NR-RetroWorks uses those tools where they make sense while trying to preserve compatibility with the original hardware.

That includes projects ranging from simple mechanical replacement parts to considerably more ambitious hardware and software development.

Refurbishment, Not a General Repair Shop

NR-RetroWorks offers refurbished hardware and develops replacement parts and upgrades, but I do not operate as an open-ended electronics repair service.

The focus is on products and projects that can be properly understood, tested, documented, and supported rather than taking in arbitrary broken hardware and hoping for the best.

When refurbished hardware is offered for sale, it is inspected and worked on as part of that refurbishment process before being listed.

Designed to Be Useful

I have little interest in producing something just because it can be sold.

A replacement part should fit correctly. An upgrade should solve a real problem. A reproduction should behave like the hardware it replaces. If a design has limitations, those limitations should be understood rather than hidden.

That same philosophy applies to the projects documented in the Workbench section, including experimental hardware, software development, reverse engineering, and projects that may eventually become products.

Small by Design

NR-RetroWorks is intentionally small.

That means development, testing, product preparation, documentation, and customer support are all closely connected rather than being handed between departments that never touch the actual hardware.

It also means the catalog will grow based on what I can build and support properly, not simply on what can be added quickly.

Keeping Old Hardware Alive

There is an enormous amount of good hardware still out there.

Sometimes keeping it alive requires a new potentiometer, a replacement plastic part, a redesigned circuit board, or a component that did not exist when the original machine was manufactured.

Sometimes it requires considerably more engineering.

Either way, that is the part I enjoy.

NR-RetroWorks exists to build practical modern solutions for retro gaming hardware, and to keep that hardware out of the scrap pile for as long as possible.
